Waste watching pupils from St Mary’s Junior School in Twickenham will be holding a rubbish free picnic at Orleans House Gallery this Thursday (11 June).
All 60 year four pupils at the school will visit the gallery in Marble Hill Park for a special lunch where they will be thinking about the amount of waste their dinners produce, and how they can throw away less.
In the spotlight will be cling film, crisp packets and yoghurt pots, which all end up in landfill sites. Children will be encouraged to think how they and their parents could provide a sustainable lunchbox, ideally with nothing in it that cannot be composted or recycled.
The children will be sharing their ideas with Cllr Geoff Acton, Richmond Council’s new Cabinet Member for Environment, who will visit them on the day.
Cllr Acton said: “When you pile up all the rubbish that comes out of lunchboxes every day it can start to create a lot of waste which gets sent off to landfill sites. We want children, and their mums and dads, to think creatively how they can cut that down - they could try buying a re-usable sandwich box instead of getting through trolls of cling film, or taking fruit instead of crisps.”
As well as their waste free lunch, children will be taking part in rubbish relays and will join an event at Orleans House Gallery, which has been short-listed for the prestigious Art Fund Prize worth £100,000.
