A new scrutiny task group has been set up by Richmond Council’s Children’s Services Overview and Scrutiny Committee, to identify barriers that hinder parents’ participation in their children’s secondary school education and how these barriers can be overcome.
The Chairman of the task group, Cllr David Marlow, explains:
“Research shows that young people improve their academic results when their parents or carers are involved, particularly if this support extends into the home.
“Secondary results in the borough are steadily improving but we want to leave no stone unturned in making sure that pupils realise their full potential.
“We are already finding that our schools demonstrate an impressive range of methods to keep parents involved. However, the task group will be looking for ideas that will increase the level of parental participation further and reach those who are not yet taking part.”
The task group includes three councillors and one member of the public, all of whom have children who have been or are currently going through secondary education.
The group has made contact with the borough’s eight secondary schools to find out how they encourage parents and carers to maintain contact with teachers and other professionals once their children have started secondary school.
Members will also be talking to a number of parents and students to get a first-hand perspective, as well as looking outside the borough for other examples of good practice.
