A new children’s centre in Hampton has been given the go-ahead this week after Richmond Council, together with NHS Richmond, secured £1.4million of funding from the Government.
The centre will be located on the site of the Hampton Clinic in Tangley Park Road and will be jointly run by the Council, the PCT and local voluntary organisations. It will provide a range of services for children and families, and act as the borough’s second hub for children with disabilities, complementing the Croft Centre in Kew.
The news is a further boost to the Council’s vision of having a children’s centre in five different areas of the borough. Two centres, in Ham and Heathfield, opened last year, with a third, in North Barnes, opening in the autumn.
Cllr Malcolm Eady, Cabinet Member for Education and Children’s Services on Richmond Council, said:
“The aim of our Children’s Centres is to bring a range of services, which we and the PCT provide for children and families, on to one site. Doing this improves take-up of services, and families have a better chance of discovering what is available to them.”
“We already have two thriving centres in Ham and Heathfield, with a variety of health, early years, education and family support activities on offer. The new centre will be another piece in the jigsaw that will ultimately see five centre s in the borough that provide everybody with the services they and their families need, close to their homes.”
In addition to the £1.4m from the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF), the Council and NHS Richmond will be providing £300,000 towards the project.
Building work is expected to start next year, with the centre complete by 2011. Services will include; specialist services for children with a disability, ante-natal midwifery care, adult education, health visiting services, early years education, specialist speech and language support, child and adolescent mental health support, access to childcare, outreach from jobcentre plus, domestic violence support services, parenting courses, young parents groups, supervised contact, family counselling and regular community activities.
All services currently provided at the Clinic will continue during the building of the new centre.
Commenting on the news, Richard Tyler, Chief Operating Officer at NHS Richmond, said:
“We are delighted that the funding for the new children’s centre in Hampton has been approved and that work will begin in 2010. We look forward to working with our colleagues in the borough in developing this exciting new scheme.”
