Drivers in Richmond town centre will have a diversion free summer, after a series of Council works to improve roads, junctions and traffic flow was completed.
The Council has been carrying out the works, which include using high quality York Stone, removing unneeded street clutter and signage and installing new traffic lights and crossings for several months.
While important, the works had led to a number of unavoidable diversion routes being put in place. From this month, the Council’s works are due to finish until next year, leaving streets from Richmond Circus all the way to Twickenham free to drive through without hindrance.
Cllr David Trigg, Richmond Council’s Cabinet Member for Traffic, Transport and Parking, said: “I’m aware the works have been inconvenient, but we want everyone to know that routes will be diversion free, meaning holidaymakers and residents will no longer be caught up in queues, or diverted out of their way because of roadworks.
“Our contractors have worked seven days a week to get the work done in the shortest time possible, and I’d like to thank everyone for bearing with us. The new street scene will create an even more attractive Richmond for the future.”
Contractors will still be working on footpaths until August, but it is not thought they will cause serious problems for pedestrians. By autumn, all of the Council’s works to improve the town centre are due to be finished. There will be a small amount of traffic management in place in the meantime, but no new diversions.
A new stage of works will start again further along the A305 in March / April 2010 as part of the on-going programme to improve routes through the borough, which will also see a redesign of the area around Richmond railway station.
