Council makes cycling even easier

Schoolchildren are being given the chance to get fit and healthy on their bikes by riding into lessons, with more than 200 new cycle stands being installed by the Council during the last 12 months.

As well as the significant numbers installed in schools, an extra 200-plus stands have also been installed in town centres, public parks and residential areas across Richmond upon Thames.

The figures have been released by the Council during National Bike Week 2009 (13-21), a Government initiative to promote the health, exercise and financial benefits. Even more stands are expected during the next financial year, thanks to funding from TFL through the Council’s Smarter Travel Richmond upon Thames programme.

Among the town centres to benefit is Teddington with 40 new bike stands having been installed there to make it easier for people to ride into the town centre. At least 90 new stands have been spread across the borough’s town centres to encourage people to cycle to meet friends or do their shopping.

A further 30 stand have been installed at Pools in the Park in Old Deer Park, Richmond, doubling the number and improving the quality of those previously there.

Councillor David Trigg, Richmond Council’s Cabinet Member for Traffic, Transport and Parking, said: “Cycling keeps more money in your pocket, it’s better for the environment and a great way for children to get fit, so we want to make it as easy as possible for people of every age to ride around our borough.

“The extra stands mean hundreds of people should be able to easily park their bikes right in the heart of our towns and in their school grounds, which is not always the case when you’re driving.

“We’ve spent time working out exactly the right place for bike stands to be installed in Teddington so they are near popular areas and businesses, which means nobody will need to walk too far for their favourite shop or coffee house.”

The work is in addition to the nearly 90 stands which Richmond Council has installed in secure areas under the Civic Centre in Twickenham, again doubling the number previously there. These stands will encourage more Council staff to cycle to work, and will free up cycle stands in Twickenham town centre, reducing congestion, at the same time.
