Stay Safe During The Games

Residents in Richmond upon Thames should make preparations to stay safe during the Olympic Games this summer.

The Police will operate business as usual during the Games and all call outs will be dealt with within the normal amount of time. It is still important to be aware of the increased need for care. As large crowds descend upon the borough to watch the torch relay, the cycle races and the cycle time trial they will also bring with them increased risks to local residents. Residents are reminded to look after their valuables, take measures to avoid pick pockets and make sure to secure properties and cars at all times.

Inspector Karen Duckworth, Twickenham Police said:

“It is going to be an exciting few weeks in Richmond upon Thames, but I would urge people to take extra care of themselves and their property. If they see anything or anyone that they consider suspicious, to call us straight away. If in doubt, dial. Dial 999 for an emergency, or 101 for a non-emergency.”

Cllr Geoffrey Samuel, Richmond Council Cabinet Member for Finance and Resources and Chairman of the Council’s Strategic Olympics Programme Board, said:

“During the Olympics there will be large crowds on the event days and I urge residents to ensure that they look after their possessions. The police will be a visible presence but it is important to be vigilant.

“It is also important to add that we are not affected by the G4S security issue and all official Olympic stewards staffing our Olympic events are from a separate company, commissioned by Transport for London. They have all been trained with local knowledge and we are confident that there will be no issues. In addition, despite large numbers of police officers being drafted in to assist with the security at the stadiums, the police presence in this borough will be strong and we have assurances that response times to any criminal activity will be within the normal charter times.

“Despite all of this, I do reiterate the message to all residents: Please take care to secure your houses and be careful of your possessions as you move around the borough during the events. You can never be too careful. I wish everyone a happy and safe Olympic games.”
