Council confirms 400,000 extra cash for new community road and pavement fund

Richmond Council has announced £400,000 extra funding for the first year of its new Community Road and Pavement Fund, bringing the total for the first round of work to £890,000.

The extra funding follows an initial announcement of £490,000 for the first year’s improvement work, which has been divided equally between the borough’s 14 villages to target roads and pavements most in need of repairs and enhancement. This programme is over and above the very significant annual increase in normal footpath and roadway works, which trebled in the last budget and includes 110 other pieces of highway maintenance work this year.

The new funding follows results from Richmond’s Council’s All in One survey, in which residents highlighted the condition of pavements and roads among their top concerns.

As a result, the council invited residents in all of the borough’s 14 villages to nominate local roads and footpaths for repair, attracting responses from more than 400 people between April and May.

Residents from each village highlighted specific roads and pavements affected by potholes, trip hazards and tree roots. Responses have now been processed and the council has made its final decisions as to where the new funding will go for this year.

The improvements also form part of Richmond upon Thames’ new Village Plans, which were launched earlier this month outlining local priorities for each village and highlighting how people can get involved in improving their community.

Commenting on the extra funding allocated to this work, Cllr Geoffrey Samuel, Richmond Council’s Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Finance and Resources, said:

“Our All in One survey has demonstrated just how important well-maintained roads and pavements are to our residents. So we’re delighted to be able to respond with this extra funding of £400,000, which will boost the original £490,000 set aside for this project and is over and above our regular schedule of roads and pavement maintenance.”

Cllr Chris Harrison, Richmond Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways and Street Scene, added:

“This additional programme of highway and footpath works is a further example of ‘Localism’ in action. The expanded programme of works will be a strong component of the new Village Plans, which aim to respond to the issues and concerns identified as most important to residents in each area.”

Nominations for next year’s round of additional pavement and road works are expected to open in January 2013.
