Gold medal performance from London Youth Games Team

Team Richmond were crowned overall champions in the Balfour Beatty London Youth Games following the finals at Crystal Palace last weekend (2 and 3 July), with a record number of the borough’s young sportspeople taking home a gold medal their chosen disciplines.

There were gold medals for the Archery and Cycling teams on Saturday, with the Aquathlon team also picking up team gold on Sunday. These gold medals added to those won in cross country, rowing and kayak sprint at previous events.

The finals weekend also saw silver medals for the girls tag rugby team, girls athletics and the boys squash team and bronze medals for indoor rowing and the girls volleyball team.

The overall first place position is the borough’s best ever finish in the 34 year history of the event.

The trophy was presented to Colin Sinclair Head of Sports and Fitness Services and Elaine Cahill Borough Team Organiser by British medal winning athlete, Andy Turner

Cllr Pamela Fleming, Cabinet Member for Communities on Richmond Council, said:

“This is fabulous news, building on our success at last year’s games. As one of London’s strongest boroughs – my congratulations goes to all those who took part.

“We have a borough of sportspeople, with some of the highest participation rates in the country. I am delighted that the younger generations are coming through with such success.”

Every year over 50,000 young people from the 32 London boroughs and the City of London, compete in over 30 different sports competitions that comprise the Games.The events start in spring, culminating in the finals weekend at Crystal Palace.

Over 370 young people aged between 10 -17, who either live or go to school in the borough, represented Team Richmond this year.

There was also success for the Mini-games team, represented by primary-age children. At the finals on 30 June, there was a gold medal in netball and silver medals in tag rugby, hockey and football.
