Release Date: 20/07/2009
Colourful deckchairs designed by primary school children from across Richmond upon Thames will be available for use in the newly re-launched Terrace Gardens this summer.
The deckchairs received royal recognition from HRH the Earl of Wessex when he visited the gardens earlier this month and represent ‘park life’.
Schools were asked to create seat designs which were turned into actual deckchairs to celebrate the re-opening of the gardens after their £1million refurbishment by the Council.
Cllr Geoff Acton, Richmond Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment, said: “The gardens are undoubtedly the jewel in our crown and these deckchairs add real flair and colour, which will make visits even more enjoyable.
“It’s great to see so many children had such an interest in the gardens and I hope everyone who gave us designs will really enjoy showing off their custom-made deckchairs to their families this summer.”
A prize voucher was also presented by the Council to Callum Bloor, 11, from Stanley Junior School in Teddington for the best designed deckchair. Along with Callum, Jack Bancroft, seven, from Stanley Infant School in Teddington and Isabella Hampton, five, from Carlisle Infant School in Hampton met the Prince when he visited the gardens to see their chairs.
The deckchairs will now be put out in Terrace Gardens every day during the summer and will be free to use by the public.
