Winning seven green flags recognising the quality of the borough’s parks and open spaces has been a real community effort this year, according to Richmond Council.
Terrace Gardens, Twickenham Green, Hatherop Park, Palewell Common and Fields, York House Gardens, Richmond Green and the King’s Field, have won flags thanks to joint work between the Council and friends groups, and even the Richmond Youth Partnership.
Cllr Geoff Acton, Richmond Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment said: “Residents have told us that they love our parks, but these green flags are the icing on the cake. This proves that hard work and real attention to detail pays off in creating an environment which people love to spend time in.
“I want to thank everyone who has worked so hard to keep all of the borough’s open spaces in such tip top condition. That includes users of the parks who have taken litter home and kept pets under control so greenery can grow without being trampled down.
“The support from Richmond Youth Partnership and from all of the friends’ groups, which give so much of their time really helped in winning the flags because it shows local people are willing to give their time to keep the standards high.”
Green Flag Awards recognise and reward the best parks in the country, and Richmond upon Thames’ parks stood out, after impressing the judges with excellent facilities including the consistently high standards maintenance of green space, signage and amenities.
Francis Rowland, Chairman, Friends of Palewell Common and Fields said: “We have worked closely with the Council on issues like dog fouling and the future of the pavilion and the friends have also improved the sports facilities on the common. Our volunteers work with the Council to enhance the amenities that are there and when we report any problems like graffiti, they are dealt with quickly which helps to keep standards up.”
The flag awards will be presented to Cllr Acton and staff from the Council by Michaela Strachan at a reception in Dorset on Wednesday 22 July.
Phil Barton chief executive, Keep Britain Tidy said: “I would like to congratulate this year’s winners, who have worked hard throughout the year to keep their parks to a high standard and ensure they are pleasant and enjoyable spaces for the whole community.”
