Pupils excellence celebrated

High-achieving pupils from across the borough were saluted at the Richmond Borough Schools’ Celebration of Achievement Awards, held on Tuesday 30 June.

Pupils from the borough’s primary, secondary and special schools picked up awards, having been nominated by their teachers and Council staff.

Outstanding achievers include a secondary school pupil who has excelled academically despite having arrived from Afghanistan only a year ago, with no family or formal education, and a primary school pupil who refused to take time off school despite having a series of complex leg operations.

There were also awards for those who have made progress in extracurricular activities such as poetry, piano playing and the championing of green issues, as well as 100 per cent school attendance.

Cabinet Member for Education and Children’s Services, Cllr Malcolm Eady, said:

“This annual event is an opportunity to celebrate the fantastic achievements of pupils in the borough, many of whom have overcome personal difficulties to excel. I enjoy it very much, as it demonstrates the wealth of talent and commitment to achieve shown by our young people. This year the bar, in terms of achievement, was raised even higher and my congratulations go to all who gained awards.”

Each borough school was invited to nominate a young person for their achievement across a range of areas, including sport, academic success and contribution to school life.

Award winners received vouchers for WHSmith and the Lion and Unicorn Bookshop in Richmond. The event was sponsored by Signs Express and was hosted by the Rugby Football Union.
