The achievements of young athletes who represented the borough at this year’s London Youth Games have been celebrated at The Stoop.
Harlequins players Chris Brooker and Gary Botha presented the awards to young people and support staff who helped the team finish fourth overall – the borough’s best result in the 32 year history of the games.
The team won five gold medals, had 24 other top ten finishes, as well as picking up the ‘Most Improved Borough’ trophy.
There was also a special recognition for Trevor Wetherall from Richmond Canoe Club. He received the Eileen Gray Award, a London-wide prize, recognising the contribution and dedication an individual has given to the Games.
Cllr Liz Jaeger, cabinet Member for Youth, Culture and Leisure on Richmond Council, said:
“My congratulations go to everyone who contributed to such a successful result at this year’s Games.
“As well as the effort and commitment of our athletes, we have received fantastic support from managers, volunteers and clubs, as well from Harlequins and professional athletes who live or train in the borough.
“I look forward to developing our sports programme further, through initiatives such as Competitive Edge, so that we can continue to shine at future games.”
Trevor Wetherall added:
“I have had a long association with the London Youth Games and have over the years seen many young competitors who turn up, feeling very nervous and not too sure what is expected of them, then enjoy the day and come away with a feeling of fun and involvement.
“It is vital to offer local sporting opportunities for our local youngsters, like the games. These young athletes are our sporting talent of the future and some may be inspired to carry on and achieve the highest levels.”
In addition to the awards for sporting achievement, Elaine Cahill, student at St Mary’s University won the volunteer of the year award for her involvement with the girls' tag rugby team. Fenella Sams picked up the Main Games Team Manager award for her work with the girls' hockey team and Paul Burke took home the Mini Games Team Manager award for the third year in a row.
Schools participation was recognised with Hampton School winning the boys' trophy and Waldegrave School winning the girls'. The overall contribution award went to BUSEN Martial Arts and Fitness Club in Twickenham for their continued support and achievements.
Team Richmond is sponsored by Harlequins, who presented a cheque for £4500 to the Mayor of Richmond, Councillor Celia Hodges, to contribute towards the 2010 London Youth Games.
