Over 150 adults and children got fighting fit at Hampton Sports and Fitness Centre this week (27-31 July) by taking part in an intensive karate course.
The Richmond Council run facility staged the sessions in partnership with the BUSEN Martial Arts Centre in Twickenham, with Sensi Frank Perry leading participants of all abilities through a series of drills, techniques and combat scenarios.
The week long course culminates in a grading session on Friday afternoon.
Cllr Liz Jaeger, Cabinet Member for Youth, Culture and Leisure on Richmond Council, said:
“I’m delighted the courses were so popular. We work hard to make sure our fitness facilities provide the type of classes and activities that people want to take part in and this was certainly true in this instance.
“Richmond upon Thames is well known for being a sporty borough and we are keen on making sure that people, particularly children and young people, are aware of the benefits of keeping fit and healthy.
“Martial arts are becoming increasingly popular as a way of doing this and I hope those who took part will maintain their interest into the future.”
As part of the training BUSEN offered a number of free spaces to the local schools in Hampton.
Sensi Frank Perry, commented:
“Its special to see martial arts so strong in the borough, both the BUSEN and the courses at Hampton Sports & Fitness Centre continue to go from strength to strength each year.”
