How much power are you wasting?

Everyone knows that leaving TVs, DVD players and stereos on standby wastes electricity…but do you know how much?

The new energy monitor gadgets available in all Richmond Council libraries can show householders exactly how much power they are using, at any time, and how much it costs, meaning they can calculate how much they could save by switching off equipment.

The monitors, funded by the Council as part of its commitment to helping residents save money and energy, and improving the environment, can be borrowed free, just like a book. All libraries have at least four of the monitors and they can be loaned out for up to three weeks, giving people plenty of time to find out how much electricity they are consuming at home.

Councillor Geoff Acton, Richmond Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment said: “These devices are really useful, and they will make people aware of just how much energy is actually being used. They can throw up a couple of surprises, but we can all do our bit to cut wasted energy and reduce carbon dioxide emissions.”

The monitors come with instructions and a guide on practical ways everyone can save energy at home. They give accurate real time readings, so, for instance, the benefit of turning the tumble drier off will instantly be shown on the display.

Cllr Acton added: “The thing to remember is that we can all make a difference. By making a few changes, like turning the telly off overnight to cut you energy usage will really save you money.”

The monitor includes a clip which is attached to the main electricity supply in the home. This reads the level of electricity being used, and feeds into a palm sized monitor which shows the costs and of electricity being used, and the volume in kilowatt-hours. Other data is included, like a three day and monthly reading.

A total of 62 energy monitors are available in libraries and anyone with a borough library card can take them out.
