Game, set and match...for free!

More than 30 public tennis courts in the borough will be free to use through the summer holidays, as part of Richmond Council’s continuing commitment to encourage sport and healthy living.

All of the courts that the Council directly manages will be open to anyone from now until 2 September 2009 to play on, in order to help improve their game and levels of fitness.

Announcing the move this week, Cllr Liz Jaeger, Richmond Council’s Cabinet Member for Youth, Culture and Leisure, said: “We were all inspired by Andy Murray’s performance at Wimbledon this year. We’re hoping that by opening up our courts during the school holidays, we can encourage more young people and families to make full use of the facilities and aim for that elusive place in the finals!

“We know money is tight during the recession so the Council is helping people to exercise by making the courts free so they won’t have to pay any more money to keep fit. I hope this will prove to be a popular addition to the range of summer activities that the Council is offering through its leisure and youth services.”

The Council is beginning to draw up plans to launch borough-wide tennis management which will secure investment in the courts for years to come. The courts included in the free tennis programme are:

  • Barn Elms – 3 courts
  • Carlisle Park – 7 courts
  • King Georges Field – 4 courts
  • Kneller Gardens – 4 courts
  • Moormead – 4 courts
  • Sheen Common – 4 courts
  • Westerley Ware – 3 courts
  • York House Gardens – 4 courts

For those who want to build on their tennis skills, the Council offers a wide range of adult and junior tennis coaching at five sites across the London Borough of Richmond. The Council has five Lawn Tennis Association qualified, experienced and enthusiastic coaches. For more details visit our Tennis coaching page.
