Council thanks Father Thames Trust for donations

The Father Thames Trust has been thanked by Richmond Council for its latest donation of £90,000 to the London’s Arcadia project which has been given this month.

That figure is on top of the £188,391 which it gave in March, bringing the total contribution from the Trust to London’s Arcadia to more than £865,000.

The trust’s generosity has been praised by Cllr Serge Lourie, leader of Richmond Council: “On behalf of all partners in the scheme, I would very much like to thank the Father Thames Trust for this outstanding work, this kind of generosity ensures we are able to keep our borough’s green spaces in first rate condition and among the best in London.”

The London’s Arcadia project works to educate people about the Thames, and access to it. It has motivated volunteering to improve the Thames on an unprecedented scale. Approaching 50,000 hours of volunteer work have been contributed by all age groups.

It promotes conservation of the historic towpath along the Thames and to improve the biodiversity of wildlife habitats and focuses on improving access to the river and foreshore and links to centres like Ham House and Marble Hill House, and has restored a number of historic avenues and re-landscaped gardens.

The Arcadia itself covers the stretch of the Thames running from Teddington beneath Richmond Hill to Kew. Richmond Council is a key partner and has co-ordinated volunteer days, helping people to contribute to their surroundings. More than 100 conservation schemes have or are taking place to improve the area.

Cllr Lourie added: “I want to re-iterate how much the Council values being part of London’s Arcadia, which serves as a useful example of the difference that can be made when local authorities work with the voluntary sector, partners and local people to change Richmond Upon Thames for the better.”

Lord Watson of Richmond, the trust’s chairman, said: “The Father Thames Trust was set up in 1996 as an initiative by residents who felt the River Thames was at the very heart of our heritage, and that it is the community’s most important natural asset.”

“Individuals, trusts and companies have been extraordinarily generous in their support”.

“I’m particularly happy to have the opportunity, as chairman of the trust to play this part in Arcadia It is wonderful to have a genuine success to celebrate.”
