Richmond Council is upping its game to keep the borough’s streets clean during the hottest days of summer.
The Council has extended its street cleaning programme to midnight and is focussing in particular on the scourge of cigarette butts that are being dropped on pavements outside bars and restaurants.
The Council has also put cigarette litter bins near train stations and in town centres.
Cllr Geoff Acton, Richmond Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment said:
“Clean streets are a key priority in our borough – it’s what our residents want.
It is also what our local businesses want and we can help out during these difficult times by doing everything possible to enhance the borough’s reputation as one of the great British destinations.
“Litter of any kind on our streets is not welcome. The message is people should recycle, use bins or take it home. And now our teams will be on hand to make sure cigarette butts and other leftovers are cleaned even quicker than before.
“We have worked with pubs and businesses to remind customers and staff of the need to keep our streets clean. We do have the power to issue on the spot fines and we will do this if necessary, but we would far prefer to work with people first.”
