Businesses get greener thanks to Council

More than 40 businesses have received environmental reviews to cut waste, energy and water use and provide greener travel for staff since Richmond Council’s Go Green programme launched last year.

The Council launched the project after a number of firms across the borough asked for environmental assessments and advice to help save money.

Cllr Geoff Acton, Richmond Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment said: “Helping businesses to protect the environment and save money at the same time is one of the most important services the Council can provide during the recession.

“I’m really pleased so many have seen the benefits of energy efficiency and have noticed how much money they can keep hold of by making changes to the way they operate. The measures we are sharing work best if they are taken to heart and not just given lip service and I’m really pleased to see this is the case across a number of sectors.”

Since the Go Green team launched, 14 seminars have been held for business, training 200 employees on issues like reducing energy bills, legislation and motivating staff to be more resource efficient.

Fifteen firms have benefited from a course on using environmental management systems. Environmental awareness has also been raised with over 700 businesses at trade fairs and networking events.

More than 24 businesses have received official Go Green Richmond upon Thames awards. Businesses achieving the Merit accreditation have implemented good practices across energy, waste, water, travel and purchasing showing their concern for the environment and putting in practices to improve their sustainability and save money.

Ian Dobie, Managing Director of developers St George West London said: “We are delighted to be involved in Go Green Richmond upon Thames, which has demonstrated that if all residents and businesses make relatively minor adjustments to their working environment and lifestyles we can make significant inroads into reducing carbon emissions.”

Nigel Sinsbury, Finance Director for fit-out and refurbishment firm IOR Group, said: “Reducing our carbon emissions has been a priority for the company and now we have a full ‘green’ company policy.

“As an office design company we work with many businesses looking to refurbish their properties. When we are helping them plan for their futures, we encourage them to think about how they can be more environmentally friendly."
