Borough blooms under the spotlight

The best blooms, bushes and plants in Richmond upon Thames have been scrutinised by judges from London in Bloom, as the borough competes against the rest of the capital for honours in the annual competition.

The judges took part in a two day tour of the borough’s schools, town centres and parks in a tour organised by Richmond Council, to see if they measure up to the required standards to win awards at a ceremony to be held at Twickenham Stadium in September.

Cllr Geoff Acton, Richmond Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment said: “We’re confident of bringing home a clutch of trophies, we know how important it is for tourism and business that the borough looks its best throughout the year and the displays I’ve seen have been exceptional.

“This competition is a great example of the Council and individual residents, organisations, businesses and volunteers all working together to really make Richmond upon Thames stand out. I hope the judges recognise the really impressive effort that has gone into our gardens this year.

“For the last three years we’ve won a silver gilt award, or second place, but hopefully, the refurbished Terrace Gardens, the £400,000 grant for Crane Park and the 93 per cent satisfaction rating among residents for parks and open spaces, as well as our focus on improvements in areas of relative deprivation, will lead to a gold award, it’s fingers crossed all round!”

Richmond Council launched London in Bloom last month, after winning the right to host the city-wide awards from the organising committee earlier this year. Civic leaders and horticulturalists from across London are expected to take part in the ceremony on Friday 11 September when the winners will be announced. The competition is sponsored by Veolia Environmental Services.

The borough’s entry in London in Bloom is co-ordinated by the Council and consists of winners from the Richmond in Bloom competition, which was judged in late June. Twickenham was entered in the best town category and Terrace Gardens in Richmond were entered for the best park award.

As part of their judging of the whole borough, the judges, escorted by Council staff visited York House Gardens in Twickenham, Whitton, Hampton Wick, Sheen and Richmond, where they looked at floral displays created by pubs and schools and in the front gardens of residents’ homes.

The work which the Council has carried out on publically owned land has been presented to the judges in a portfolio which will be used alongside their visit to make a final decision.
