Tea and Tango in Twickenham

Two hundred older residents were treated to a tea dance yesterday, thanks to savings made in the reduction of the Leader of the Council’s allowance.

In May 2010 councillors agreed that their salaries should be reduced. Lord True, Leader of Richmond Council, requested that savings from his allowance be put to one side for events and activities supporting older residents.

Yesterday 200 residents came along to York House for a free tea dance, enjoying music from the Ross Mitchell Combo.

This follows on from a number of events over Christmas, where day centres around the borough hosted Christmas parties and entertainment.

Lord True said:

“Seeing this money used in this way was a way to say thank you to residents who have made such an important contribution to our borough. Unfortunately not all of us are lucky enough to have friends or family around. That is why when we reduced our allowances, I asked for the savings to be put to one side for a fund for activities for older people.

“I was pleased that some of the money was applied to the local tea dance, and it was fabulous that the dance floor was always full – showing the ballroom prowess of our older residents.

“Whilst this special tea dance was a ‘one-off’, one local resident, Beryl Lywood does host two smaller versions once a month, that aim to bring our community together and help ensure our residents remain happy and healthy throughout the year. I hope that all the guests who came to the tea dance enjoyed their afternoon and continue to come along to Beryl’s monthly events.”

Beryl Lywoods next tea dance is on the 30 January and the 20 February in the Clarendon Hall, York House from 1.30-3.40pm. For more information, call Beryl on 020 8894 4482
