Saved Windham Croft Centre 'back in business'

The Windham Croft Centre has been completely refurbished, thanks to investment by the Council. In addition to providing support and services to children with disabilities the centre also includes improvements to Jigsaw nursery and new children’s centre activities.

The extended and refurbished centre due to be officially opened on Wednesday 11 January will enable families to access many health and social care services.

It will include provision for well-baby clinics, baby massage and developmental assessments for all children in addition to specialist play facilities and activities clubs for children with disabilities.

Councillor Christine Percival, Richmond Council’s Cabinet Member for Education, Youth and Children’s Services, said: “The Windham Croft Centre for Children has been providing vital support and services to children with disabilities for many years and this upgrade will greatly improve its excellent work in conjunction with the nursery and children’s centre services.”

“We recognised what a vital service the centre was for local people, and so the council took the decision, when the government withdrew funding for its refurbishment and expansion at the last minute, that it was right to find the money to do the work on this very important facility for some of our most vulnerable people. This is public money wisely spent which will provide direct benefits to local young families.”

A purpose-built sensory room and new outdoor space will enhance children’s play. The garden features community art created through the Aiming High programme especially for the Windham Croft Centre.

A new three-bedroom flat has also been created to offer overnight stays for children with disabilities, this will be Richmond’s only residential short break facility and is expected to be up and running in April 2012, pending approval from the Care Quality Commission. It is envisaged the flat will help to develop independent living skills amongst young people living with disabilities.
