Release Date: 16/01/2012
A new guide promoting dozens of local businesses, hotels and world class attractions to tourists has been published by Richmond Council. The VisitRichmond Guide 2012 is intended to support the borough’s economy and encourage visitors to stay and shop locally.
Every year tourists from around the world visit Richmond upon Thames, and with London due to host the Olympics, numbers are expected to swell significantly this year. The guide and its updated website www.visitrichmond.co.uk are a key tool for local businesses and the tourism sector, including Richmond Park, Kew Gardens, Hampton Court Palace and RFU.
Cllr Pamela Fleming, Richmond Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities, Business and Culture, said: “This borough receives more than four million visitors a year, and our guide is a vital platform for local businesses, hotels and attractions which tourists will enjoy visiting or staying at. It’s also a useful resource for residents who want to find out more about what’s on their doorstep.
“Supporting the economy in all its forms is absolutely key to helping the borough recover from the recession, and this is one of the most obvious ways to do it. We have circulated 30,000 copies of the guide around Richmond upon Thames, and to locations in the UK like major tourist information offices and hotels. Free copies also available at libraries, sports centres, information points and from April at Richmond station.
“When tourists pick up a copy and see the wealth of entertainment, shopping and accommodation on offer they should realise a trip here is essential. Those visits all help keep our shops, hotels and businesses alive so we are keen to include as many as possible, to show the best we have to offer. Tourism generates £292m in revenue for businesses in the borough, so the Council will do all it can to provide support.”
The guide highlights hotels like The Lensbury, the Twickenham Marriott Hotel and Petersham Hotel, as well as B&Bs or self catered accommodation such as The Old Stables in St Margarets, The Chestnuts and the Victorian Villa in Hampton.
It also lists local river businesses like Turks Launches and Hammertons Ferry, arts centres, more than 20 restaurants, from Sonny’s in Barnes to A Cena in Twickenham and markets in Barnes, Richmond, Twickenham and Kew. Luxury shops in Church Street, Twickenham and in the cobbled lanes of Richmond are highlighted as are pubs like The Victoria and the Leonardo Wine Bar in Sheen. The guide includes details of child friendly entertainment including Krafty Kidz and Pottery Café in East Twickenham and Kew Ceramics Café.
