The Flux, Flow, Flight: Art in Motion exhibition celebrating the theme of physical movement in the visual arts, dance and performance finishes its run at the Orleans House Gallery, Twickenham on Sunday 22 January 2012.
Over 600 pieces of art were submitted to Orleans House Gallery in October 2011, to be considered for the Flux, Flow, Flight exhibition - which explores the physical motion of the human and animal form, machines, technology, and the bustle of urban existence. Sixty works by 45 artists were selected in a variety of media and styles.
The exhibition displays the work of Jacqueline Matisse-Monnier (who works under the name Jackie Matisse), granddaughter of French artist Henri Matisse. Her work, rarely exhibited in the UK, includes four stunning kite tail artworks, a mobile and films.
These pieces hang alongside 40 historical works spanning four centuries and include historical items from the Royal Ballet School, the Estorick Collection of Italian Art and the Muybridge Collection at Kingston Museum, as well as Richmond’s own Borough Art Collection.
Cllr Pamela Fleming, Richmond Council Cabinet Member for Community, Business and Culture, said:
“This is a very special exhibition. There was a phenomenal response to the open request for submissions and I know that the Exhibitions and Collections team at Orleans House Gallery had a huge number to choose from.
“The selected pieces celebrate over 400 years of art, through a number of mediums. The work from Jackie Matisse is also a rare privilege. I urge residents to pay this exhibition a visit before it ends to see her beautiful pieces, alongside other stunning contemporary works and art created by the gallery’s regular art groups.”
Flux, Flow, Flight runs until 22 January at Orleans House Gallery. Admission is free. For more information, or opening times, go to: www.richmond.gov.uk/arts
