Keeping Richmond warm this winter

Over 300 older residents in Richmond upon Thames are being offered free support to keep their homes warm and also advice on keeping healthy and well this winter thanks to a £160,000 grant from the Department of Health.

The funding is for the Winter Warmth project, coordinated jointly by Richmond Council, NHS Richmond, Age UK and the Home Improvement Agency, which will see a series of keeping warm and well support options for over 75s.

Support includes free home visits to advise on saving energy and ensuring homes are insulated for the cold winter months. Also on offer will be free installation of central heating, draught proofing and wall and loft insulation plus information and advice on keeping healthy and well

Cllr Nicola Urquhart, Richmond Council’s Cabinet Member for Adult Services and Housing said: “This funding will enable us to ensure that our most vulnerable residents are warm, comfortable and well in their homes over the next few months, especially at a time when heating systems can pack up or prove too costly. Ensuring homes are properly insulated and highlighting the savings to be made will help to keep people living happily in their own homes for as long as possible, which is one of our top priorities.

“This project is also a good example of partnership working with the local community groups, NHS Richmond and the voluntary sector to the benefit of our residents.”

Partners in the local community will also benefit from this funding, as volunteers and caseworkers, for example, Age Concern’s handyperson service will receive training so that they can carry out the home visits to ensure residents are using the best energy saving options, are living well, making healthy choices and have access to the information they require.
