One of the main shopping streets in Barnes will be given a £400,000 makeover by Richmond Council during the next five months. Church Road will have new pavements installed to create a more attractive shopping area for local people.
The pavements on both sides of the road have become cracked and uneven leaving the area looking run down. The Council will use £250,000 from Boris Johnson’s Outer London Fund phase one, and £150,000 from Transport for London, to replace paving in front of shops at the Rocks Lane end and to carry out re-surfacing within the road .
Cllr Pamela Fleming, Richmond Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities, Business and Culture said: “We are taking real, tangible steps to support our local shops. We are improving Barnes, literally from the ground up, reviving area and beginning to create a street where people will enjoy shopping in good local stores. Once the work is finished, I hope business owners will see a rise in trade and happier customers. In our All in One survey, more than a third of Barnes people said the state of the pavements was an issue for them. We have listened and now we are responding.”
Cllr Chris Harrison, Richmond Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways and Street Scene said: “We want our busiest roads to be places which are attractive and overall, safe, for people to visit. The improvements planned in Church Road will I’m sure make a difference, you only have to look at the stretch of Twickenham’s riverside which was upgraded in 2010 to see the benefits. I hope people will bear with us while our contractors carry out the work, in the long term Church Road will be a much more satisfying place to visit.”
The project begins this month and is due to finish in May. It will include a combination of high quality ‘heritage gravel’ and new paving slabs
In addition to improving the road surface and pavements in Church Road, the Council also plans to use Outer London Fund grants to improve road signage to highlight the availability of local shops to encourage trade. During the spring and summer new floral displays will be installed to brighten up the High Street area. A Barnes Trail will be created to entertain tourists and guide them through the town and past many local shops, increasing footfall for businesses.
