Improving graves at East Sheen cemetery

Almost 50 dilapidated gravestones and memorial crosses at East Sheen cemetery will be repaired by Richmond Council, to perpetuate the memory of local people’s forebears who are buried in the area.

The work is part of a project to reinstate just over 100 graves in three cemeteries where stones and crosses have deteriorated over time, making them unstable and unattractive.

Cllr Virginia Morris, Richmond Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment, said: “Our cemeteries are places of dignity and remembrance for families so we want to go some way towards making sure they are well maintained and attractive for visitors. The stones have deteriorated over time and as well as running cemeteries which are respectful, we also need to ensure they are in good order for people visiting them now.”

Staff attempted to contact families of people buried in the graves where memorials need maintenance, as it is their responsibility to look after the plots and stones. In many cases though, due to the age of the graves, this was not possible.

The authority is now taking action to carry out some improvement works itself to improve the appearance of the cemeteries. A number of stones and crosses which could not stand upright any longer were laid down and part of the work will see them fixed into an upright position again.

As well as working in East Sheen, 23 memorials will be fixed back into place at Teddington cemetery and 34 at Twickenham. The team is focussing on crosses and stones nearest to the main walkways. Where stones or crosses have become unstable, they will be re-cut and fixed to stabilise them.

It is hoped that this first tranche of repairs will be completed by April. Depending on funding, further work will include re-instatement work at Hampton Cemetery and the Old Mortlake Burial Ground, Although neither have space for new graves, they are used regularly by the public.
