Gritters ready for winter issued

The borough is well prepared for cold weather this winter, with Council teams on standby to work around the clock over Christmas and New Year if there is snow and ice.

Already the authority’s gritting trucks have been out in the small hours on six occasions, so streets are safer when temperatures hit freezing point. During the summer, the Council’s grit mountain was re-stocked to over 2,000 tonnes in preparation for another cold winter.

Cllr Chris Harrison, Richmond Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways and Street Scene, said: “Keeping the main roads open and safe to use is something people quite rightly expect from their Council. Our teams will work around the clock if necessary to ensure this is the case for the borough’s busiest routes.

“We are fully stocked with grit and we have promised to treat more pavements in busy or hilly areas after people told us this was an issue in the past.

“This year for the first time, we’re also supporting community groups which would like to have their own supply of grit, to cover areas the Council can’t get to. Any other groups which would be interested in having a supply of grit should get in touch with us.

“The cold weather remains a challenge, but between the Council and residents this borough is well prepared to deal with whatever Mother Nature throws at us. We will grit busy streets to keep traffic moving and high streets open. Residents can do their bit by sweeping aside any snow from the pavements in front of their homes.”

The Snow Code, the Government’s advice on clearing roads and pavements, is published on www.direct.gov.uk. It explains how householders are unlikely to be sued if there is an accident on a pavement which they have cleared, as long as it is done sensibly.

Community groups which would like to buy a grit bin from the Council can visit http://www.richmond.gov.uk/road_gritting for details.
