Dignity Action Day 2012

Treat people with compassion, care and dignity is the message from Richmond Council this week in support of Dignity Action Day on 1 February 2012.

Dignity Action Day was launched in 2010 by the Dignity in Care Network. Supported by Sir Michael Parkinson and Dignity Ambassador Dame Joan Bakewell, its message is a strong one about treating people with respect, ensuring they have choice and control over their care, a sense of purpose and stimulation in their lives.

Cllr Nicola Urquhart, Richmond Council’s Cabinet Member for Adults Services, Health and Housing says, “Dignity in care is very important to me and is something we strive for in Richmond upon Thames. The message of providing choice and control, and respect and compassion is something we work hard to achieve locally and I would like to encourage everyone to support the Dignity in Care campaign. It is not only about one week, but about treating people with respect and dignity every day.”

Cllr Rita Palmer, Champion for Senior Residents in Richmond upon Thames added: ‘Dignity Action Day is a chance to really look at yourself and ask, am I treating older people with the care and respect they deserve? Many older residents, who live in care homes or in their own homes around the borough, can live lonely lives. Dignity Action is also about providing stimulation and a lifeline to these people. Take a moment of your time and offer to volunteer through Age UK and in turn become a champion for Dignity in Care.”
