Dance fever set to hit the Borough

Dance fever is set to hit the borough when the RichDance festival returns in March.

The annual festival is a celebration of local talent and dance of all styles. Launched in 2002, by Richmond Arts Service it provides young people, dance and community groups an opportunity to perform and showcase their skills and choreography.

RichDance has grown each year, with more than 600 participants in 2011. The two day festival, taking place Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 March at Hampton School, encourages participants of all ages to share their skills and experience a diverse range of dance styles.

As well as performances during the two days there will also be workshops for participants to learn new skills and forms of dance. Emerging choreographers also have an opportunity to present their own dance at the festival by applying for the Emerging Choreographers’ Platform.

As part of the festival participants can meet industry professionals to learn more about studying dance and upcoming events. In previous years, representatives from The Place, English National Ballet, Big Dance, Laban, Roehampton University and Combination Dance have been present at the festival.

Cllr Pamela Fleming, Strategic Cabinet Member for Communities, Business and Culture on Richmond Council, said: “This festival is a wonderful opportunity for dance enthusiasts of all ages to perform for family, friends and the general public.

“I particularly encourage aspiring choreographers to enter an original dance piece and meet with the various representatives from some of the country’s finest dance schools.”

Applications to be part of the RichDance are now open and the deadline for choreographers’ applications is Friday 10 February. For an application form and more information on showcasing your choreography contact emma.cookson@richmond.gov.uk.

Application packs can also be downloaded from our dance page.
