Ninety new permanent reception class places per year will be provided across six primary schools in Twickenham, Heathfield and Hampton Wick, should expansion plans be approved at Cabinet next week.
As part of its 10 year school places strategy, the Council is proposing to expand Heathfield Infant and Heathfield Junior from two to three forms of entry, and to expand, Hampton Wick Infant and Nursery and St John the Baptist CE Junior from two to three forms of entry.
It is also proposed that Orleans Infant and St Stephen’s CE Junior will be converted into two-form entry primary schools. This will provide an increase of 30 places per year and create a third geographical Reception entry point within St Margaret’s and central Twickenham.
To accommodate the additional pupils, all six schools would see development work to their buildings, facilities or classrooms, costing a total of £10.4million.
Cllr Paul Hodgins, Richmond Council Cabinet Member for Schools, said: “Our primary schools have high levels of attainment and are understandably heavily over subscribed, and we are working hard to introduce a number of measures to ensure that we meet the demand for high quality places for all children in the borough.
“Introducing bulge classes is only a ‘short-term’ fix. We hope that by instead adding permanent forms of entry in the areas of the borough that are struggling to meet the demand, we will provide a longer-term solution.
”I would like to thank the head teachers, staff, governors and parents of these fine schools for working so constructively with us to ensure that there are enough school places for their local communities.
”I am sure that they will continue to work very closely with us so that the building designs give them and the children they serve as many benefits as possible.”
