Chance to get arty in Mortlake

Young people in Mortlake now have the opportunity to brush up on their art skills with free art classes at the Powerstation Youth Centre where they will explore a range of techniques and materials including painting, sculpture and print-making.

Anyone aged 11 - 16 can attend the classes on Wednesdays (4-6pm) and as well as learning new skills, participants can find out about inspiring artists and how to run an art show. Those who attend can also achieve an Arts Award, an accredited Level 1 national qualification.

This new after school art club is being funded by a grant awarded to the Arts Service by the Youth Commissioning Panel, a group of young people who judge the bids of organisations that provide services for young people aged 11 - 19 across the borough.

Cllr Christine Percival, Cabinet Member for Education, Youth and Children’s Services, said: “I’m delighted the Youth Commissioning Panel shared the Council’s view that establishing a new art club for young people in Mortlake was a stimulating and worthwhile venture”

“This club is a great opportunity to learn new skills and have fun. The club aims to help young people express their creativity though art and will introduce them to the tools and techniques used by contemporary artists. I urge young people to enrol in the classes and explore their artistic talents.”

Places are free but limited and will be allocated on a first come first served basis for the whole term. Booking is essential. Classes begin on 18 January 2012 and run throughout the spring term.

To book a place contact Rachel Craddock at the Council’s Arts Service on 020 8831 6000 or rachel.craddock@richmond.gov.uk.
