Residents asked about future plan for Twickenham

The fifteen year plan for the future of Twickenham will be out for public scrutiny from the 16 December for eight weeks.

The Twickenham Area Action Plan has been compiled using the results of a number of public consultations regarding the future of the area, and so far thousands of respondents have had a chance to have their say.

The draft Plan outlines an overall strategy for the future of Twickenham, potentially transforming King Street and the Riverside and creating a high quality town centre serving local residents, workers and visitors - a destination of choice with a unique sense of place.

The Plan will be available online until the 10 February and at a public consultation on Friday 27th January and Saturday 28th January 2012.

Lord True, Leader of Richmond Council, said:

“For 25 years the Council has failed to produce a comprehensive plan for Twickenham and failed to engage local people in Twickenham’s future. Regenerating Twickenham was one of the main promises of this administration. We have to operate within the constraints of resources and of the planning framework we inherited, but we will be investing considerable sums in this programme.

“You told us that Twickenham Town Centre needs a revitalised retail centre with a new ’heart’, improved public space with access to the river, better shops and an attractive High Street with less conflict between traffic and pedestrians. The Council is listening. I hope when residents read the Plan, they will see many of the ideas they generated have been included and they will endorse this document as the basis of a blue print for a Twickenham that will enable a strong local economy whilst making the most of its distinctive heritage.”

Cllr Virginia Morris, Richmond Council Cabinet Member for Environment and Planning, added:

“Over the past year thousands of people have told us about their vision for Twickenham. We have consulted and listened and have now produced a document that will form the foundation for any future development in the area.

“Important decisions on the future of Twickenham cannot be taken by the Council in isolation. If we are to get it right we must work in close partnership with local residents and businesses. Over the next eight weeks I urge all local residents in Twickenham to read the report and tell us if our plans be a lasting solution for the area.”

From the 16th December, the Twickenham Area Action Plan will be available on our  Pre-publication of the Twickenham Area Action Plan page.

An exhibition of the plan will be available in the Civic Centre Reception on Friday 27th January from 6pm – 8pm and Saturday 28th January 2012 from 10am – 2pm.
