Residents’ groups in Richmond upon Thames are being encouraged to apply for energy efficiency grants from a new £10m Government fund.
The Local Energy Assessment Fund has been set up to give communities across the country a head start on the possibilities that are opening up through the Government’s forthcoming Green Deal programme for making homes more energy efficient. Grants of up to £50,000 per application could be available.
Cllr Virginia Morris, Richmond Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment, said: “This fund is a very welcome announcement from Government - energy efficiency is an easy way for families and local groups to cut the borough’s carbon emissions and their utility bills at the same time. Any way for people to take advantage of money to help them get started is a bonus. I would encourage all groups which might be interested to look through the website and see if it is something they could get involved with.”
The funding will be available for not-for-profit and voluntary groups and can be used to commission assessments of the energy efficiency levels of homes or buildings.
The fund could also pay for demonstration projects of the type of measures shortly to be available through the Green Deal, and could fund feasibility studies for community renewable energy projects. Under the fund’s guidelines, organisations could also apply for money to run awareness-raising and engagement events and meetings
Interested communities can apply via www.greencommunitiescc.org.uk before 20 January with successful communities notified at the end January.
