First images of new Riverside pool site unveiled

The first images of how Richmond Council will transform the derelict swimming pool on Twickenham Riverside into a new park and public square have been revealed.

An artist’s impression and other drawings of the site have been made public by the Council, to show local people how the area will be opened up. The artist’s impression shows a grassed area immediately behind Café Sunshine and a park space in front of the old diving board, which will be kept as a memorial to the long struggle to re-open the site. A square section closest to the old changing rooms would be paved to become a public square. The Council hopes this would tie in to plans for the section of the site which currently has buildings on, which will be brought forward after further consultation next year.

Cllr Virginia Morris, Richmond Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment, said: “This administration promised to do everything we could to put the Riverside into the hands of the people of Twickenham. We are now in a position to show residents, workers and businesses what we will do, so everybody is aware. If people take the time to see what is to be done, I’m sure they will be as impressed as I am.

“The design came about after we listened to the community, and indeed is based on a planning application from the Twickenham Riverside Terrace Group which we have taken forward. I’m excited about this scheme which will lead to another outstanding open space in our borough, it is very fitting that it should open just in time for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, so at last the area can live up to its name of Jubilee Gardens.”

The plans are based on community-led proposals and were been brought together following consultation with local people and businesses through the Barefoot consultation, the Twickenham Conference and the All in One process.

Shoppers in King Street and Heath Road will find it easier to visit the site as the entrance will be improved, building on comments from local businesses, about the benefits of a public square at this end of the town centre. Pride of place will go to a new feature commemorating the jubilee.

The play area will be retained and bounded by a low hedge. New railings and trees will be installed around the edges of the site for safety and to create ambience.

The project, due to start in early February, represents the biggest step towards the fulfilment of the Council’s commitment to making the town’s riverside available for everyone to use and enjoy after three decades of indecision and lost opportunities.

An artist’s impression, and plan showing how the Council would like to open up the site will be available to view between 11am and 3pm at Café Sunshine on 23, 28 and 30 December and on Wednesday 4, Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 January in Café Sunshine. You can also view the proposals on our website.
