Council with community at its heart

Richmond Council has published proposals this week that will put community involvement at the heart of everything it does.

Building on the All in One survey and events over the summer which gave all residents a chance to have a say about their local areas, and the successful community resource bank events held last month, the Council is now planning how it will support local people who want to get involved.

At a Cabinet Meeting next Thursday, Members will discuss proposals that will encourage residents to make a contribution, including plans to further support social enterprise, possible expansion of the Civic Pride Award, and improving communications to ensure that people know what is going on in their area. This includes proposals to launch a series of e-newsletters, which will provide information for each area of the borough on what is happening and linking in with local groups and individuals that would like to promote their activities

The Council is also compiling all the feedback generated through the All in One into a series of ‘village plans’, setting out a vision for the area and outlining how the Council will deliver some of the outcomes requested by residents.

Cllr Pamela Fleming, Richmond Council Cabinet Member for Community, Business and Culture, said: “We have always been very open that the Council cannot do everything and we want to work with the community. Throughout our All in One process, it has become clear people do want to play a role in improving their neighbourhood. People don’t need – or want - to rely on the Council for every little thing.

“Whilst it is true that this is the most community-minded borough in London and many of us think volunteering and supporting the community is a good idea, we don’t always get round to doing it. This report set out how we will create a platform that will make it easier for people to get involved – making a real difference to where they live.”

The Village Plans will be published for public consultation in the New Year.
