Christmas cheer for older residents

Older residents around the borough will be treated to a number of Christmas delights this winter, thanks to savings made last year by the reduction of the Leader of the Council’s allowance.

In May 2010 councillors agreed to the administration’s proposal that their allowances should be reduced, and larger savings were made in the Special Responsibility Allowances paid to leading members. Lord True, Leader of Richmond Council, requested that savings from his allowance be put to one side for events and activities supporting older residents at Christmas.

Over the next month, day centres around the borough will be hosting Christmas parties with entertainment and presents whilst residents at RHP’s Dean Road extra care housing scheme, in partnership with Age UK, will be holding a festive celebration with a Christmas lunch – older residents from around the Hampton area are invited to attend.

The events carry on into the New Year, when older people are invited to attend a free tea dance at York House with the Ross Mitchell Combo band.

Lord True said: “Christmas is a time for families to be together. Unfortunately not all of us are lucky enough to have friends or family around. That is why when we reduced Member allowances and cut the Leader’s allowance by 12.5 per cent, I asked for the savings be put to one side for a Christmas fund for activities for older people.

“Our day centres will be alive with activity this December, with Sheen Lane hosting a client carers Christmas lunch and the Access Project in Whitton holding a Christmas party with singer-song writer, Jerry Langley.

“I am also pleased that some of the money has been donated to a local tea dance in the New Year, which will be free to any older residents in the borough who enjoy ballroom dancing.

“For some older people, Christmas can be a lonely time. That’s why events like these are so important. They aim to bring our community together, reduce isolation and help ensure our residents remain happy and healthy over the winter season. This is also my way of saying thank you to residents who have made such an important contribution to our borough. I am sure that all of these events will be a great success.”

The Christmas Lunch at Dean Road in Hampton is on 21 December 2011. The doors open at 10am with lunch served between 12-2pm. As there is limited availability, please call 020 8941 8951 to reserve your space.
