Release Date: 08/12/2011
Children from the Croft Centre are attending a special screening of Happy Feet 2 on the 18 December – thanks to an ‘autism friendly’ screening at Richmond Odeon.
The screening is thanks to learning disability and support provider – Dimensions. Dimensions is a not-for-profit provider that works with individuals, supporting them to live the life they choose
This project aims to show newly released films, in an environment that is more inclusive to people with autism and people with learning disabilities.
Cllr Christine Percival, Richmond Council Cabinet Member for Education, Youth and Children’s Services, said:
“This is a very good opportunity for children in our borough with autism or learning disabilities to see a new film in a setting where they will feel comfortable.
“Some people with autism are sensitive to sound and light and they can find going to the cinema difficult.
“During this show low lights are left on in the auditorium and the volume of the soundtrack is reduced. It is fine for people to move around, make noise or take a break during the film.
"I would like to thank Dimensions and our local ODEON for providing this opportunity; for recognising that small accommodations can be made, and for ensuring that children with autism can also enjoy a night at the movies. I am sure that children from the Croft Centre, and others in the borough will enjoy this outing.”
Director of Specialist Development at Dimensions, Lisa Hopkins, added:
"One in a hundred people in England and Wales are diagnosed with autism and yet society isn’t always suited to the needs of people on the autism spectrum. The cinema experience can be a particularly challenging environment but it is one that can be made accessible by good partnership working. ‘Autism Friendly Film Screenings’ are all about inclusion. As an organisation we would like to get people talking and thinking about other ways in which society can be more inclusive to everyone.”
The film is on Sunday 18 December at 11.30am. To book tickets, call the ODEON's Accessibility Helpline on 0800 138 3315 (Network charges may apply) between 11am and 8pm or by visiting your closest cinema.Tickets are on sale from 14 December.
