Bloomers praised by Mayor
Gardeners from Richmond upon Thames have been thanked for their commitment to keeping the borough among the greenest in the capital, at a London in Bloom reception hosted by the Mayor, Cllr Clare Head on Wednesday afternoon.
During the reception, London in Bloom Certificates of Excellence were presented to 31 people in recognition of the horticultural high standards they had achieved throughout the year. Six In My Neighbourhood awards were also given out.
The best of the borough’s front gardens, schools, public spaces and public houses are selected every year from Richmond in Bloom by Richmond Council to form an entry into the London in Bloom competition. Many more people achieve the high standards expected but cannot be included in the strict entry criteria. However, these people then become eligible for the Excellence awards as a thank you for their hard work.
Cllr Head said: “We have among the keenest gardeners in London living here in our wonderful borough. It is very fitting that we give credit and publically thank those who reached the high standards London in Bloom expects.
“People’s enthusiasm must be maintained if we are to create the flowered borough which the Council has envisioned for Richmond upon Thames. I hope bringing everyone together here at York House fosters new ideas and even more exciting ways of keeping our borough bright for the future.”
The Its Your Neighbourhood awards are run by London in Bloom on behalf of the Royal Horticultural Society’s Community Gardening Campaign. This is a free to enter non-competitive campaign to encourage local people and communities to make environmental improvements in their area. The awards were assessed by London in Bloom judges in July who were looking for examples of community involvement, environmental responsibility and good gardening practice.
