Documents you will each need to produce when you give notice to marry
When you give your notices you will each need to produce the following:
- Your passport or;
- Full British birth certificate plus a form of photo ID.
- Two proofs of address – your council tax demand and a utility bill / driving licence / bank statement.
- There is a statutory fee of £35 to pay for each notice given. Credit card payments are subject to a handling fee. There is no handling fee for debit card payments.
You may also need to produce some of the following documents, if they apply to you:
- Decree Absolute - if you have been divorced.
- Final Order of Civil Partnership Dissolution - if you were in a former registered Civil Partnership.
- Translation of decree absolute or civil partnership dissolution - if your divorce/dissolution was outside of the UK, you may need to provide an English translation of your papers. You should note that, depending on the country / state where your divorce was granted, the registrar may have to send copies of your paperwork to the General Register Office for verification, and it will not be possible to issue the legal paperwork to allow your ceremony to take place until that process has been completed.
- Death Certificate of your late wife, husband or civil partner - if you are a widow, widower or surviving civil partner.
- Decree of Nullity - if you had your previous marriage annulled.
- Change of Name Deed or statutory declaration - if you have changed your name by deed poll.
- Gender Recognition Certificate - if either of you has changed gender.
All documents produced must be originals and photocopies will not be accepted.
