Details needed to register a birth

The registrar will require certain information when you come in to register the birth. The details you will be asked:

Baby

  • Place of birth
  • Date of birth
  • Time of birth (for multiple births only)
  • Forenames and surname (in which it is intended that the baby will be brought up)
  • Sex of baby

Father

(Where details are entered in the registration)

  • Forenames and surname (and any other names used)
  • Place of birth
  • Date of birth
  • Occupation
  • Address at time of registration (if different from Mother's address)
  • Date of marriage (if applicable)

Mother

  • Forenames and surname (and any other names used)
  • Place of birth
  • Date of birth
  • Occupation
  • Maiden surname
  • Surname at marriage if different from maiden surname
  • Address at time of baby’s birth
  • Address at time of registration (if moved since baby was born)
  • Date of marriage (if applicable)
  • Number of children born alive / Number of still-births
  • If you have you been married before

If English is not your first language, feel free to ask a friend or relative to help and attend the office with you, but please remember you must register the birth in person.
