Trading Standards verification and test fees

All fees are plus VAT at the prevailing rate

Fees for the purposes of section 11 of the Weights and Measures Act 1985 or for Regulation 11 of the Non-automatic Weighing Instruments (EEC requirements) Regulations 1992 or any other statute or instrument replacing the aforesaid or instrument made thereunder.

Special weighing and measuring equipment

Charges for examining, adjusting, testing, certifying, stamping, authorising or reporting on special weighing or measuring equipment specifically excluded from tables (b) to (g) below at the rate per officer/hour of.

Where, by virtue of the capacity, location or any other reason it is necessary for the Trading Standards Service to hire wights or other equipment in order to test weighing instruments, then those hire costs shall be added to the fees listed above.

Additional Devices/ Peripheral Equipment

The fees specified above are for the testing of the equipment or instrument specified. Where the equipment or instrument has additional devices or peripheral equipment which also require testing, such as remote readouts, scanning devices, credit card acceptors etc, there is an additional charge of £75.75 per hour.

Bulk submissions of items included in tables (b) to (e) above

Where two or more of the same type are submitted on one occasion, the total fees are reduced by 20%.

Variation of charges

The Head of Consumer Protection may, by prior agreement with the submitter of the equipment, vary the fees listed in this schedule in the following circumstances:

  • Where the Trading Standards Service faces competition from other Approved bodies for their verification service and the Head of Consumer Protection judges that it is in the commercial interests of the service.
  • Where the submitter of the equipment provides additional assistance over and above that which they are legally obliged to provide, e.g. labour, accommodation or equipment.

Section 74 of the Weights and Measures Act 1985

Where the fee to be charged is under Section 74 of the Weights and Measures Act 1985, then the fee shall be charged at the rate of £67.00 per officer hour and shall include travelling time and any time taken to prepare any required report.

Additional charges

Where it is agreed that the verification shall take place outside the times Monday to Friday 8am to 6pm or on a bank holiday, then the overall fee, after any additions or discounts are taken into account, shall be increased by 20%.
