Business Rates
Important changes to unoccupied property rating from 01/04/08.
Your Business Rate bill is based on the rateable value of the property and the multiplier. You can pay your business rates online here.
The rateable value is set by the Valuation Officer who works for the Inland Revenue Valuation Agency, not the Council. The rateable value is based on the rental value for which a property could have been let on the open market on 1st April 2003 - plus the square footage, usage and location.
Business Rates collected by the council are paid into a central pool maintained by the Government. This money is then redistributed to local authorities on the basis of their population.
