Dickens 2012 Writing competition results
As part of our Dickens 2012 celebrations in April we held a writing competition with a challenge to retell the story of Oliver Twist in exactly 101 words.
The judges ruled that the following entry from Ms S Eden was the winner.
“You loaded, man?” exclaimed Oliver’s new friend. “Yo how come?”
“I was in the orphan dump,” began Oliver. “Believe. But I got outta da crib and hit the smoke. Met wiv the homies.”
“You and the Dodger – you besties then?” Oliver’s friend looked impressed.
“I ain’t lying. We stayz on his manor." Oliver was on fire. “We got the scrappa from an old dude.”
“Bag o’bones?”
Oliver smirked. “He was lunchin. Dodger was going to klepto him. But I seez a grand hustle.”
Oliver gave his best mean look. “Laid it on. The story was killa. We is now family. Sweet.
Dickens 2012 Quiz Competition Results
No-one got every single answer to the quiz correct but the person with the most correct answers was judged to be the winner. Congratulations to Ms R Ursell, our online quiz winner.

An evening with Madeline Miller: Shortlisted for the Orange Prize 2012
The story of the epic Trojan Wars brilliantly told for a new generation. Madeline Miller is a passionate advocate for the classics and for the value of the classical stories in the modern world. Madeline Miller has a BA and MA from Brown University in Latin and Ancient Greek, and has been teaching both for the past nine years. This is her first novel and it is already a NY Times bestseller.

Mid-Summer Craft Fair at Twickenham Library
Come to our mid-summer craft fair, with lots of stalls including artwork, jewellery, candles, patchwork items, scarves, plus a travel photographic exhibition by Meenakhi Borooah.
There will also be a special children’s storytime at 2:30pm with Ali Pye, illustrator of the popular new children’s book Where is Fred.
Saturday 16 June 11am - 4.00pm at Twickenham Library. Free entry.

Tiny Teddies
Most libraries also hold monthly bounce and rhyme sessions for pre-school children, called Tiny Teddies. These sessions are great fun and include songs, rhyme and stories. All these activities are free of charge.
