Frequently Asked Questions
What devices are compatible?
The compatibility list is updated frequently and is the best place to check if your device will work.
Can I use a Kindle?
Amazon do not allow the Kindle to be used in conjunction with our eLibrary. The compatibility list includes devices that can be used in the United States, where Amazon do allow the Kindle to be used with Overdrive eBooks. The list will state if there are any geographical limitations next to the device.
Can I use the eLibrary if I don't have a Richmond Library card and live outside the borough?
You must have a valid library card and PIN to use the eLibrary. To become a member of the Library you must live, work or study in the borough and you must visit a branch library in person to join.
I've never used ebooks or eaudio can someone help?
We recommend reading the quick start guide and watching the video before you download items. You can book an introductory session on how to use our eLibrary service where we will show you our eLibrary collection and how to download from it. The session does not cover other download services and we can't connect your device to our laptop. To book a session call 0208 734 3308 or email information@richmond.gov.uk.
Can you help set up my device?
No, due to the number of different devices we are unable to give you guidance on how to set up your own device. The technical help pages may offer advice on some aspects of setting up devices so they can be used with our service.
How many titles can I take out at the same time?
You can have up to 5 items out at a time.
What is 'Your Basket'?
When you come across an available title that you may want to check out, you can click 'Add to basket' to place the title in your Basket. Placing a title in your Basket is like placing it on temporary reserve; as long as the title is in your Basket, it will remain available for you to check out. The system will automatically remove a title from your Basket 30 minutes after you have placed it there, making the title available to other patrons. Our system allows you to put up to 7 titles in your Basket at the same time.
When I check out a title, how many days do I get to keep it?
Lending periods can vary from title to title. Additionally, you can set personalised default lending period(s) at the 'Lending Periods' page. Additionally, you can select a lending period on a title-by-title basis. In the course of checking out any title, you will have the option to select a different lending period for that specific title.
Can I return items early?
Due to publisher licensing agreements, titles cannot be returned early. They will automatically be returned at the end of the lending period.
Can I renew items I have checked out?
The items you have checked out cannot be renewed, but you can check them out again if they are available when the checkout expires.
What happens when I place an item on hold?
You can place up to 5 titles on hold at a given time. The title you have placed on hold will be reserved for you to check out once it becomes available. When the title is available for you, you will receive an email the item will be held for 3 days starting when you are emailed notice that the title is available.
