How is it elected?
In a UK European Parliamentary election, you have one vote to elect all of your MEPs. Each party puts forward a regional list of candidates and you vote for one of these or for an individual candidate standing as an independent. The number of MEPs that are elected from each party to represent a region depends on the overall share of votes that each party receives.
The whole of London elects eight of these members on a party list system. The voter selects a political party or individual independent candidate and the eight seats are distributed in proportion to the votes cast over the whole of London. Prior to EU expansion, this number of MEPs was nine.
When is it elected?
Elections for the European Parliament take place every five years, the latest being 4 June 2009, and the next scheduled to take place in June 2014.
