The Cultural Olympiad

The Cultural Olympiad 2008-2012 is a four year programme of activity in London and throughout the UK that places culture at the heart of the London 2012 Games. It is an integral part of the London 2012 Vision and will enable people to take part in cultural events and celebrations, both nationally and locally.

The Cultural Olympiad was launched on 26 September 2008.

What's happening in 2012

Richmond is celebrating 2012 in style! Throughout the year there will be stunning events, schools projects, contemporary art and exhibitions which engage, entertain and involve everyone who lives, works and visits the Borough. Highlights include:

  • Year-long Diamond Rings Dramatic Edge programme.
  • Truce the Ambassador Theatre Group’s Playwright in Residence Project at Richmond Theatre from January.
  • Holi festival of colour in March.
  • The Garden of Reason art project at Ham House from April.
  • 2012 Dreams borough schools exhibition from June.
  • Olympic inspired version of Shakespeare’s Athenian comedy 'A Midsummer Night’s Dream', at the Orange Tree Theatre, Richmond.
  • Jubilee Garden Party at Hampton Court.
  • Carnival in June.
  • Big Dance in July.
  • Outdoor arts festival July-September.
  • 'Polemically Small' exhibition at Orleans House Gallery, June to September.

Previous events

In 2011, as part of Stories of the World, the Borough organised the exhibition Journeys at Orleans House Gallery. Taking the personal effects of explorer Sir Richard Burton as inspiration, this exhibition investigated the theme of journeys through contemporary art created by local young people and artists from around the world. In 2010, the London Borough of Richmond celebrated the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad with Heritage Now!
