Pensions Service
The Pensions Service is a Direct Service Organisation (DSO), within the Payroll and Pensions Service providing the administration of the Local Government Pension Scheme for non-teaching employees of the Council.
The Local Government Pension Scheme is a statutory public service pension scheme for local government employees in England and Wales. Its rules are set out in the Local Government Pension Scheme Regulations 1997, which came into effect on 1 April 1998. It is administered by county councils, London Boroughs, lead metropolitan district councils, unitary authorities in England and Wales, the London Pensions Fund Authority and the Environment Agency. The statutory framework is the responsibility of the Secretary of State for the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG).
To be able to join the scheme an employee must work for a scheme employer or an employer that has been admitted to the scheme.
A scheme employer is a body whose employees are automatically members of the pension scheme unless they opt out. It includes the Council and higher education corporations in the borough.
Admitted bodies are employers that meet certain conditions and have negotiated with the Council to participate in the scheme by means of an admission agreement. The admission agreement usually states that the admitted body may nominate some or all of its employees to join the pension scheme.
