In line with the Government’s plans to reduce rough sleeping and homelessness, residents in Richmond upon Thames are being asked to help shape the Council’s approach to addressing the problem, in a consultation launched this week.
The online consultation, which closes on Tuesday 21 February, asks residents to comment on a draft homelessness strategy that outlines a number of housing issues that need to be addressed to tackle homelessness in the borough. These include; how we respond to homelessness, with particular attention on how it affects 16 and 17 year olds, rough sleepers, the problems of people who have a mental illness and the need for more affordable housing in the borough.
Cllr Pamela Fleming, Strategic Cabinet Member for Community, Business and Culture said: “While the majority of residents in Richmond upon Thames are unaffected by homelessness and live comfortably, there are still people in the borough who live with the constant threat of homelessness or being unable to afford rent.
“Homelessness can be caused by a number of factors and is not necessarily intentional. Sometimes people find they are homeless due to an abusive relationship or in other cases mental illness and drug use can play a part, sometimes it’s because families’ breakdown or bills can’t be paid following the loss of employment. Either way, it is something that needs to be addressed. As a Council we have promised to consult and listen to residents on local issues, therefore I would like to encourage you to express your views on our draft homelessness strategy by taking part in this online consultation.”
The results of the consultation will help to define the 2012 to 2016 Homelessness Strategy for Richmond upon Thames.
