Who can register a birth
The informant needs to be qualified to register the birth as the:
- Mother
- Father (if married to baby's mother)
- Mother and Father (if not married to each other)
Mother
Whether you are married to the father or not you can register the birth of your baby, however:
If you are not married and wish for the father's details to be included on the birth registration, he will need to attend with you.
If you are married, the father's details will be included.
Father
If you are not married and wish for your details to be included on the birth registration, you will need to attend with the mother.
If you are married to the mother, you can register the birth of your baby.
Mother and father
If you are not married to each other you will both need to attend together if the father's details are to be included on the birth registration.
If you are married to each other you can both attend but it only requires one of you.
