Stanley Junior School
The week of the 6th to the 10th of July 2009, Stanley Junior School had an Environmental Week! The whole week was packed full of fun activities!
On Monday 6th, Year 5 went to the bee hives in Twickenham to learn about bees. They were given the chance to see bees really close up and learnt lots about them.
On Tuesday one of the parents came in to talk about environmental issues and what we can do to help. One of the Year 3 classes went to Spacewaye in Feltham to learn about recycling and reusing.
Wednesday didn’t have as much going on, although it was still really enjoyable. Year 5 had a Materials workshop where they made banners from napkins and recycled clothes.
Thursday was a complete contrast. Four very lucky Year 5 pupils went to Twickenham rugby ground. It was a Scientific Edge event and they had to build balloon-powered cars! Then there was a competition to see whose car went furthest! Year 4 did a similar workshop to all the Year 5s the previous day, but based on habitats which they all really enjoyed! The other two Year 3 classes went to Spacewaye as well.
Now if you thought Thursday was busy, you haven’t heard about Friday yet! We had tours all morning for parents conducted by the Eco Council. They even took the Richmond Mayor round the school! The Year 3s were doing a recycling relay, which looked really exciting, plus they were helping to make our school a cleaner place. Year 4 did a pond dipping workshop by the school pond looking at the different creatures that lived in there. At the same time, Year 5 were having talks about stag beetles from a lady from the People’s Trust for Endangered Species (PTES). It was really interesting, and they even buried special stag beetle buckets in the ground to help save these rare beetles! The whole school had a special assembly where Joe Pecorelli from the Richmond Environment Trust talked to us about how our actions affected people and animals all around the world. As well as that, Year 6 had a talk called “Hidden Costs of Sustainability”! Wow! But that was only the morning!
During lunchtime we had a solar car race. Year 5 teams from each of our school houses had built a solar-powered car and now it was time to test them out! Everyone watched excitedly. After three races, Barcelona house were declared the winners! To finish off, we had the first ever Stanley Swap Shop! Earlier, lots of people had brought in their unwanted books or toys and exchanged them for tokens. Now you were given the chance to swap your tokens for a book or toy that someone else had brought in!
The Eco Week was a really fun event that everyone at Stanley really enjoyed!
